Thursday - two days before opening and all hands on deck to install all the work (well - most hands on deck.....) It's so exciting, and a bit scary too, before an exhibition; how will the work look in the gallery - how it'll all 'fit' together and how much space we actually have for all the work.... More photos to come after the opening! Gitte xx

“Estranged”
Our pathway to this exhibition began as a cohort of MFA students at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design from 2008-10. A close-knit group, we supported each other through our studies, the critiques and group shows. Our connection continued as we met for regular seminars and reviewed each other’s work and ideas. Our friendships run deep. ‘Estranged’ expresses each of our personal responses to a world that has shifted its axis and tilted into strangeness. Each artist has considered the theme from personal, local or global viewpoints. The common thread is the link to our humanity. As this project unfolded and our work developed it became clear in our seminars how many strands were connected. Motifs and colours serendipitously related. This project has come to have more poignancy and impact for each of us. We are delighted to share with you our exhibition ‘Estranged’. Julie Exhibition date gets closer and closer - and there are so many things to take care of: - Invites - Brochures - Posters - Web-site update - Statements - Images of art work - Finish art work for exhibition.... (Yep, that's a big one...:) - Advertising, where, who, when - Artist talks during exhibition, who, when... And the list goes on.... But thankfully as a group it seems we get it all done, including the work itself - here's a few photos of what's going on at the moment... Gitte xx Today we met up to have a look at everybody's progress - and so much had happened since last :) Rowan and Denise were there - virtually, both via Messenger :) Here's a few photos from today's meet-up. My project for the exhibition Estranged is my first sculpture/installation piece.
It comprises of a large three metre long Orange Roughy fish (NZ's poster child for the fishing industry) fabricated from the Auckland City Council 60 litre rubbish bags. The bladder of plastic will be inflated with air and incorporate an air pump mechanism to inflate and release the trapped air in a rhythmic pattern to imitate breathing.

Thought provoking when we realise the advancing world is fast changing what we consider to be art!
Also the film acknowledging the importance of groups of people working towards one goal ... just like us :) Click here to see video. Rowan Establishing a group like ours take a bit of work.... enjoyable work :)
Our first job is to find a name for our group - and we've had quite a few ideas - but haven't decided yet. I guess that's always the 'problem' when a group of people has to make a decision - it can be a challenge. But... we like challenges. Challenges are what make life fun. Life without challenges would be boring! Next is to find a way to collaborate on these different challenges. We've tried to use Facebook - as everybody seems to be using Facebook already - but it's just not a collaborative tool. So at the moment a few of us are testing a tool called 'Trello' - which seems to be doing the job. I think we just need a couple of more days testing before we invite the whole group in - and then it all comes down to using the software..... :) We've also sent off our first proposal for an exhibition at The Depot Artspace. An exhibition that will coincide with Auckland Art Week (September/October 2017) - so things are definitely happening - and they are happening fast :) GItte - xx |
